Introduction to Thessalonians
This book helps us understand how the Kingdom of God—the rule and reign of God—entered the city of Thessalonica, located in the district of Macedonia, despite severe persecution. This took place through the ministry of Paul and his companions (Acts 17:1–10). The rule of God then spread beyond Thessalonica (1 Thessalonians 1:8–10) through a very young and newly converted fellowship.
This letter focuses on understanding the three key pillars, or marks, of an overcoming fellowship:
- Faith – which points to salvation
- Love – which points to service
- Hope – which points to steadfastness
In this letter, Paul also sheds light on the stage of the church concerning “sleeping in the Lord Jesus and gathering with Christ.” Other stages of the church, addressed in other letters, include:
- Dead without Christ
- Seated with Christ
- Walking with Christ
- Standing with Christ
- Sleeping in Christ
- Gathering with Christ
- Reigning with Christ
