Winning souls that seek the lord with all their hearts
Introduction
In this session, John 20: 11-23, the study continues Mary’s search for the body of Jesus at the tomb. After Peter and John had gone home, Mary was left in the tomb crying. Twice, she was challenged by the angels and Jesus as to why she was crying. Jesus appeared to Mary and not the men because of her deep levels of seeking after him, even without knowing the scriptures. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Group Study Time
John 20:11-23
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.

- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
- Read John 20: 11-18. Why did the women see the resurrected Jesus while men did not? Why was Mary crying at the entrance of the tomb? What did Jesus tell Mary the Magdalena, and why? Why would Jesus reveal himself to those without an understanding of the Scriptures?
- What did Jesus mean by telling Mary, don’t cling to me John 20: 17. What relationship is revealed between God and believers after the Resurrection of Jesus?
- Read John 20: 19-23. What did Jesus do to prove to his dreadful disciples that he was risen? Why had the disciples closed themselves in a house? What is the connection between fear and peace of God? Between fear and the Holy Spirit?

Winning souls that seek the lord with all their hearts
John 20:11-23
Audio Summary
John 20:11-23
- Context:
- Jesus promised, “Those who seek me will find me” (cf. Hebrews 11:6; Jeremiah 29:13), rewarding diligent seekers, even without full understanding.
- Focus: How Jesus wins souls of diligent seekers, exemplified by Mary Magdalene and the women.
- Mary’s Diligent Seeking (John 20:11-18):
- Mary Magdalene, last at the tomb during burial and first to return with spices, sought Jesus’ body, not expecting resurrection.
- After Peter and John left, she stayed, weeping outside the tomb, then bent to look inside—driven by love, not understanding.
- Revelation to Mary:
- Saw two angels where Jesus’ body had been (unseen by disciples), who asked, “Woman, why are you crying?”—she replied, “They have taken my Lord away.”
- Turned and saw Jesus (mistaking Him for the gardener), asking where His body was; Jesus called her “Mary,” revealing Himself—she recognized Him as “Teacher.”
- Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended,” indicating His ongoing priestly mission.
- Contrast with Disciples:
- Peter and John saw the empty tomb but left without understanding (John 20:1-10); they lacked diligent seeking, missing Jesus’ presence.
- Mary’s persistence, despite ignorance, led to Jesus appearing—showing seeking trumps understanding.
- Lessons on Seeking:
- Diligent seeking with the heart, not just knowledge, finds Jesus; Mary’s love for His body (the church) drove her.
- Avoid over-relying on others (e.g., pastors) for prayer; the torn veil (access to God) empowers personal seeking.
- “Do not hold on” clarified: Mary likely touched Jesus, but He urged her not to cling, as He had to ascend as High Priest to present His sacrifice (cf. Hebrews 9:11-12).
- Application:
- Jesus reveals Himself to diligent seekers—understanding enhances, but love and faith suffice; all, even without theology, can find Him.
