Introduction
In this session, Matthew 27:1-26, we observe through various witnesses that Jesus was indeed the Lamb of God, without spot or blemish, and therefore sacrificed for the sins of the world because He was sinless. The witnesses who testified in the governor’s court about Jesus’ innocence included Judas, the chief priests and elders, Jesus Himself, Pilate, Pilate’s wife, and the crowd.
Objectives
By the end of this session, you will have:
- Reflected on Jesus’ innocence of sin by examining the testimonies of six witnesses in the court of Governor Pilate.
- Gained confidence to respond to anyone who questions why you believe Jesus was innocent of sin by quoting these six witnesses.
- Appreciated the significance of the death of the Lamb of God by demonstrating that He was without spot or blemish.

What do the verses mean?
(In small groups, attempt the following questions.)
- List all the characters mentioned in these verses during Jesus’ trial in Pilate’s court.
- What did they do or fail to do in proving that Jesus was innocent of sin? (Matthew 27:1-26)
- Read Matthew 27:3-5. What did Judas say or do, or fail to do, as a witness that Jesus was innocent of sin (commission and omission)?
- Read Matthew 27:1-2; Matthew 27:6-10. List what the leading priests and elders of the people said/did or failed to say/do as witnesses that Jesus was innocent.
- Read Matthew 27:11-14. As the accused, what did Jesus say/do or fail to say/do to show that He was innocent of any sin?
- Read Matthew 27:15-18; Matthew 27:21-24. List what Pilate, the judge/governor, said/did or failed to say/do, which shows that Jesus was declared innocent of sin.
- Read Matthew 27:19. Write down what Pilate’s wife said/did as a witness that Jesus was innocent of sin.
- Read Matthew 27:20, Matthew 27:25-26. What did the crowd say/do, or how were they influenced to witness that Jesus was innocent of sin?
