Jesus Denied and Deserted by a Friend: The Falling Away from Faith P2
Introduction
In this session, Matthew 26:51-75, we will uncover the painful denial by a trusted friend and the desertion of fellowship members during the hour of greatest need. Jesus had already forewarned the disciples that they would all fall away because of Him, but He also assured them that He would restore them afterward. This session highlights the five steps Peter took as he gradually distanced himself from his faith in Jesus. Peter’s journey is marked by reliance on the flesh, ultimately leading to bitter weeping and regret. These five steps include openly declaring self-confidence, which reveals his trust in human strength; sleeping when he should have been praying; resorting to physical weapons to defend Jesus; following Jesus from a distance; and finally, seeking comfort in the company of those who were strangers to his faith.
