Jesus Denied and Deserted by a Friend: The Falling Away from Faith
Introduction
In this session, Matthew 26:30-50, we explore the challenges of remaining faithful during times of trial, particularly the painful denial by a close friend and the desertion by members of the fellowship in their moment of need. Following the previous session, where Jesus prepared His disciples for His impending death by revealing the plots of His enemies and the betrayal by a trusted friend, we now delve into the emotional and spiritual struggles that ensued. Jesus foretold that all His disciples would fall away because of Him, but He also assured them of His plan to restore them afterward. This session highlights the five steps Peter took as he fell away from his faith in Jesus—a path marked by self-confidence in the flesh, neglecting prayer, resorting to physical means for spiritual battles, distancing himself from Jesus, and ultimately, seeking comfort in the wrong company. These steps culminate in bitter weeping and regret, serving as a profound lesson on the dangers of relying on our own strength rather than on God.
