Expressing Christ Among Co-workers: The Grace of Receiving Through Mercy (Part 5)
Introduction
In Matthew 20:17-34, Jesus addresses the stumbling blocks that hinder expressing and manifesting Christ among the workers—Part 5. After teaching His disciples about the grace and truth of receiving and rebuking them for falling into the comparison trap in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16), Jesus now speaks to them about the only true basis for receiving: grace and mercy found in His death and resurrection. We receive freely by grace, not because of our efforts but because of what He has done for us. Through the stories in this passage, Jesus contrasts two wrong ways of receiving—through bribery (as seen in the request from the sons of Zebedee) and through force (as seen in lording it over others)—with the one right way of receiving: based on His mercy, as demonstrated by the healing of the blind man.
Objectives
By the end of this session, you will have:
- Understood that grace and mercy are the only means of receiving the Kingdom of God (the rule of God on earth and in heaven) through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
- Been warned to avoid using the wrong means of receiving positions of rulership, such as bribery and force, by analysing the actions of the two disciples and the illustration given about the rulers of this world. In summary, Jesus discusses four main methods of receiving: bribery, forcing/lording over, merit, and mercy/grace.
Outline
- Grace and mercy as the only basis for receiving and giving.
- The wrong basis for obtaining the Kingdom and the rule of God.
Group Study Time
Matthew 20:17-34
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
What do the verses mean?
(In small groups, attempt the following questions):
- What did you discover about God, His people, and the enemy in this passage? What lessons have you learned from the passage?
- How do people in this world (government, Church, offices, and military) receive their positions of leadership? Discuss three ways.
- Write a short paragraph concerning the four means of getting or receiving: through bribery, forcing or stealing, merit or our efforts, and through mercy or grace (a free gift).
- Read Matthew 20:17-19. What did Jesus reveal about the only right means of receiving or getting—namely, His death and resurrection?
- Read Matthew 20:20-23. What does this story reveal about the wrong basis of receiving, which is called spiritual bribery? (Consider what their mother did and said on their behalf.) How did Jesus correct this wrong approach?
- Read Matthew 20:24-28. Why were the ten disciples angry with John’s and James’ request for a position? What did Jesus say about the wrong, worldly way of leadership versus the Kingdom’s right way of leadership?
- Read Matthew 20:29-34. From the healing of the two blind men, what did Jesus reveal as the right approach to receiving (through mercy) and the world’s way of receiving (merit implied)?
