Testing Disciples: Assessing Their Motivation to Follow Jesus
Introduction
In this passage, Jesus continues to teach His disciples about the cost of following Him, testing their motivations and commitment. Through encounters on land and at sea, and in casting out demons, Jesus reveals the true nature of discipleship and the power of His authority.
Objectives
By the end of this session, you will have:
- Understood the five reasons why people follow others, namely: because of the leader’s position, because of what they are promised by the leader, because of what the leader does for them, because of what the leader does in them, and because of what the leader stands for—their character (as taught by John Maxwell).
- Appreciated that Jesus always tests His disciples after teaching and training them.
Outline
Jesus was the Expected Messiah as expressed through:
- The art of following (ignorant following, rejecting following, forgetting to follow).
- The cost of following and discipleship.
- Testing the motivations for following Jesus (good reasons and wrong reasons).
- John Maxwell’s five reasons for following another.
- Healing people from demon possession and the denial of a request to follow.
Group Study Time
Matthew 8:18-35
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
What do the verses mean?
(In small groups, attempt the following questions):
- Input, reflections, and tasks
- Who is a disciple? Who is a mentee? Why do people follow others? Why do you follow certain teachers?
- Why did people follow Jesus, or refuse to follow Him? Name three reasons.
- Read Matthew 8:18-20. Why did the scribe want to follow Jesus? Why did Jesus challenge or refuse him? Why did the other disciple not want to follow Jesus (Matthew 8:21-22)? What did Jesus tell him?
- Read Matthew 8:23-27. Why did Jesus take His disciples to the sea? Why did they follow Him? What lessons did the disciples learn from the sea test?
- Read Matthew 8:28-34. What five truths did Jesus teach His disciples about demons and casting out demons?
