The Prophet of the King: Jesus Will Baptise You with the Holy Spirit and Fire
Introduction
Chapter 3 explains the purpose of Jesus’ baptism and the baptism of converts. We also understand why the Pharisees and Sadducees rejected John’s baptism. Additionally, it raises the question: Why did John baptize Jesus, who was without sin?
Objectives
By the end of this session, you will have:
- Understood the principles of humility by analysing the baptism of Jesus. (Why was He baptized, and how was He baptized? What happened when He accepted baptism by John?)
- Appreciated the significance of the baptism of converts by comparing why some people accepted baptism and why the Pharisees and Sadducees rejected John’s baptism.
- Understood that people have two responses after they receive the revelation of the Unique Saviour: they either respond appropriately (confession, Kingdom Shahada, and baptism) or react inappropriately (hardening their hearts and deterring others).
Outline
Jesus was the Expected Messiah as expressed through:
- The Prophet of Christ (John the Baptist).
- The Baptism of the Saviour – Jesus (Identification with our sin).
- The Baptism of sinners (appropriate response and obedience).
- Kingdom Confession (Shahada) by sinners.
- Repentance by sinners (the difference between confession and repentance).
- Rejection by the Pharisees through the hardening of their hearts (Inappropriate response).
Group Study Time
Matthew 3:1-17
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
What do the verses mean? (In small groups, attempt the following questions):
- What is humility? Why is humility necessary in relationships? How do we show humility? How did Jesus show humility in His baptism?
- Why did John baptise Jesus, who was without sin?
- What is confession (Kingdom Shahada)? Why is confession necessary in building relationships? How should confession be done? What do we confess in the Apostles’ Creed? (One God, one body (Church), and one life.) Discuss.
- What is baptism-identification? Why should you be baptised? How should baptism be done?
- Read Matthew 3:1-4. Describe John the Baptist. Who was he? What was his main message? What were his clothes like? Why was he staying in the wilderness? Why were the masses going to John the Baptist?
- Read Matthew 3:11-12. List at least three things that John revealed about the ministry of Jesus.
- Read Matthew 3:5-6. List and discuss the two positive ways people responded to John’s preaching (confession of sins and being baptised).
- Read Matthew 3:7-10. List five truths John revealed to the Pharisees and Sadducees who came to where he was baptising. Why did John have difficulty communicating with this group? Why do you think they were coming to where John was baptising?
- Read Matthew 3:13-17. Describe the baptism of Jesus. Why did John feel that he was supposed to be baptised by Jesus? Why did John baptise Jesus? What happened after Jesus accepted baptism by John?
