The Person of Christ Through Five Witnesses (Part 1)
Introduction
Chapter one helps us understand why the birth of Jesus was extraordinary: it lists 42 generations, includes women with controversial backgrounds, highlights the virgin birth through Mary, and mentions His foster father, Joseph. This understanding helps us address three key challenges: ignorance of the Good News about Jesus, rejection of the truth about Him, and forgetting the truth of who He is (Hosea 4:6).
Objectives
By the end of this session, you will have:
- Understood the truth of Jesus’ humanity by exploring His 42 unique generations in the family tree.
- Described the extraordinary birth of Jesus by focusing on His earthly parents, Joseph and Mary.
- Recognised that Mary remained a virgin until Jesus was born.
- Answered the question of who Jesus is, drawing on the testimony of five key witnesses: His family tree, Joseph (His foster father), Mary (His mother), the angel (God’s messenger), and the prophets (through whom God spoke).
Outline
Jesus was the Expected Messiah, as revealed through:
- The Person of Christ.
- Godly Responses: Obedience to God by those who gained deeper understanding.
- The wise men/Magi, likely educated by righteous exiles in Babylon, responded faithfully.
- Jesus’ parents obeyed God’s guidance as they received more knowledge and instructions through angels and dreams.
- Negative Reactions to the Truth:
- Herod and all of Jerusalem were troubled by the news.
- King Herod devised evil schemes after receiving more information.
- The highly learned scribes, despite their knowledge, did not seek Jesus.

Comprehending
What do the verses mean?
In small groups, discuss the following questions:
- Write down three truths revealed about God (the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) in this section.
- Read Matthew 1:17. What do you learn about Jesus’s identity from His genealogy? How many generations are recorded of Jesus, the servant?
- Why does the Bible divide the record of Jesus’s generations into three periods in verse 17? (From Abraham to David, David to Babylon, Babylon to the Messiah)
- How many women are mentioned in Jesus’s genealogy (Matthew 1:3, Matthew 1:5-6, Matthew 1:16)? What challenges or difficult aspects of their lives do you know? Why are they included in Jesus’s lineage?
- Read Matthew 1:18-25. Describe five truths about the birth of Jesus the Messiah, as seen through Joseph, Mary, the angel, and the prophets.
- What do we learn about marriage and divorce from the story of Joseph and Mary?
