Introduction
In this session, we concentrate on Malachi 1:6-14, analysing the principles of biblical rebuke as God transitions from affirming His love to confronting the people’s disrespectful worship. The priests were offering diseased, lame, and stolen animals, effectively implying that God’s table was “despicable”. God demands honour and sincerity, promising that His name will be great among the nations, despite the apathy of His current people.
Objectives
By the end of this session, the learner will have:
- Identified the difference between “leftover” worship and “first-fruits” worship.
- Examined the spiritual consequences of hypocritical, routine, or insincere worship.
- Determined practical ways to honor God in daily life and service.

- Practical ways to honour God
Group Study Time
Malachi 1: 6-14
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
- Malachi 1: 6-7. What were God’s two main charges against His children? God calls Himself a “great King” and a “Father”. How does this imagery change the way we view our responsibility to worship Him?
- The priests were offering “defiled food” Malachi 1:7. What does it mean to offer “polluted” or “second-best” sacrifices to God today?
- Read Malachi 1:8. God asks if they would offer these sacrifices to a human governor. Why do we often show less respect to God than we do to people in authority?
- Read Malachi 1: 9-11. How did God respond to people’s insincere worship? What does it mean that God’s name will be great among the nations, “from the rising of the sun to its setting”?
- Read Malachi 1:12-14. What are the key signs of genuine worship? Which area of your life—whether it be time, money, or talents—are you offering God the “lame or sick” rather than your best? How might you change that this week?
