Introduction
In this session, Malachi 1:1-5 begins God’s rebuke to His children with a profound declaration of love, not a threat. “I have loved you.” However, the people, tired and cynical after returning from exile, respond with doubt. “How have you loved us?” This session explores how God demonstrates His electing love, compares it with the story of Jacob and Esau, and calls us to trust His character even when circumstances are tough.
Objectives
By the end of this session, the learner will have:
- Understood the nature of God’s electing, covenantal love.
- Analyzed why people questioned God’s love.
- Reflected on personal doubts regarding God’s love and sovereignty.
Outline
- I have loved you unconditionally.
- Questioning God’s love
- Trusting God’s character
Group Study Time
Malachi 1: 1-5
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
- Read Malachi 1: 1-2. What is God’s love? God begins by saying, “I have loved you.” Why did God start His rebuke with words of love? Why do you think the people responded with “How have you loved us?” (v. 2)?
- When have you ever questioned God’s love for you? What situations caused that feeling?
- Read Malachi 1: 2-3. How does God’s reminder of His choice of Jacob over Esau (v. 2-3) demonstrate that His love is rooted in His grace rather than human merit?
- In what ways does God’s sovereignty (the promise to tear down Edom, v. 4) give the believer security?
- How can we, as a group, support each other in maintaining a “fresh faith” when we can’t immediately see God’s love in our circumstances?
