Outcomes for Ezra
Return to your stronghold (altar, temple, and walls) and your pure worship of Yahweh.
The books of Ezra, Chronicles, and Nehemiah present Israel’s history, present state, and future state at the first and second comings of Christ. God’s intention on earth was to form a unique community centered on the true worship of God. God chose Israel, through Abraham, to welcome the nations into true, pure worship based on a covenant with God. Through corrupt communities, the carelessness of their leaders, and the Israelites’ choices and compromises (Luke 15), Israel strayed from their stronghold (father’s home) and was taken captive by idol worshippers.
The book of Ezra, called the second Exodus, invites the Israelites to return to their stronghold and rebuild it, where God promised to restore them double for their obedience. Once they returned home, they faced many difficulties, both internal and external. Their capital city, temple, and walls were broken, burned, and destroyed. Foreigners had moved in and occupied their space; they were ruled by foreign kings, not their own. They began rebuilding from the altar first, then the temple, and finally the walls, showing that the Israelites’ greatest need was true worship, not even security from their enemies. The rebuilding of their strongholds was completed through the prophetic words of Haggai and Zechariah, who emphasized that pure worship is offered on God’s terms, not ours.
Welcome to the journey of double restoration.
