Developing a greatness attitude on managing the mysteries of God
Luke 12: 49-59
Audio Summary
Luke 12:49-59
Context
- Jesus prepares disciples for opposition and hostility, developing an attitude of greatness amid challenges.
- Building on teachings about stewardship and readiness, He warns of division caused by His mission and urges discernment of spiritual signs.
Division and Discernment in the Kingdom (Luke 12:49-59)
- Jesus Brings Fire and Baptism: Jesus came to bring fire on earth and wishes it were already kindled; He has a baptism (suffering and death) to undergo and is distressed until completed—His mission brings judgment and separation.
- Not Peace but Division: From now on, He brings not peace but division—families split (father/son, mother/daughter, etc.) over allegiance to Him; opposition arises even in households.
- Interpret Signs of the Times: People interpret weather signs (cloud from west means shower, south wind means heat) but fail to interpret present spiritual times—calling them hypocrites for discerning physical but not spiritual signs of judgment and kingdom.
- Settle with Accuser Quickly: Judge for yourselves what is right; settle with an accuser on the way to magistrate to avoid being handed to judge, officer, and imprisoned until paying the last penny—urging urgent reconciliation before judgment.
- Purpose: Jesus’ coming causes division, separating those for or against Him; discern spiritual signs like weather, and act urgently to avoid judgment.
Application
- Prepare for division from following Christ, even in families; interpret spiritual signs of the times wisely, not like fools ignoring them; settle disputes quickly to avoid greater consequences, prioritizing reconciliation.
