Jesus criticizes evil religious leaders
Introduction
In this session, Luke 11: 37-54, Jesus wanted his disciples to know the current state of the people of this generation and their leaders. The crowd’s behavior is highly affected by its leaders. Whenever the leadership sees wrongly, the people will be misled too. Before trying to be an agent of transformation into any people group, first get to know who their leaders are and what their ideology is. Jesus rebuked the crowd of this generation as wicked people who only follow miracles. He also rebuked the leadership of this generation for having misled the people by hiding the key to knowledge.

Jesus criticizes evil religious leaders
Luke 11: 37-54
Audio Summary
Luke 11:37-54
Context
- Jesus dines at a Pharisee’s house after teaching on the evil generation’s demand for signs and spiritual darkness from poor discernment.
- He pronounces woes on Pharisees and experts in the law for hypocrisy, burdens, and hindering true knowledge of God.
Woes to Pharisees and Experts (Luke 11:37-54)
- Invitation and Rebuke: A Pharisee invites Jesus to eat; surprised Jesus does not wash first, Jesus says Pharisees clean cup/plate outside but inside full of greed and wickedness—fools, the Maker cares about inside and outside; give inside as alms for true cleanliness.
- Woes to Pharisees: Woe for tithing mint, rue, herbs but neglecting justice and God’s love—do both without neglecting tithing. Woe for loving best synagogue seats and respectful market greetings. Woe for being like unmarked graves people unknowingly walk over, making them unclean.
- Woes to Experts in the Law: An expert protests insult to them; Jesus woes them for burdening people with unbearable laws but not lifting a finger to help. Woe for building tombs for prophets their ancestors killed, approving their deeds. Woe for being keyholders who remove the key to knowledge—neither enter nor allow others.
- Consequence of Ancestors’ Actions: Blood of all prophets from Abel to Zechariah (killed between altar and sanctuary) required of this generation—yes, they will be charged.
- Reaction and Purpose: Pharisees and experts furiously question Jesus to catch Him in something; the generation is evil due to poor discernment and misleading leaders focused on externals over heart issues.
Application
- Focus on inner purity and justice over external rituals; act to help others rather than burden them; use knowledge to open doors to God, not hinder; pray for discerning leaders after God’s heart to avoid evil influences.
