Agape love as the firm foundation of appealing
Philemon 1: 1-12
Audio Summary
Philemon 1:1-8
Context
- The letter to Philemon, written by Paul from prison, is addressed to an elder in the Colossian church who was wealthy and owned slaves.
- During the Roman Empire, approximately one in three or four people was a slave, treated as objects without rights, where killing a slave was not gravely punished.
- Philemon, a believer, hosted a house church; the letter addresses how believers relate to slaves without directly challenging the institution but through gospel transformation.
- God’s forgiveness through Jesus provides the basis for human forgiveness; Paul appeals to Philemon to forgive runaway slave Onesimus, now a believer.
- Love is defined as deriving joy from another’s joy, as God sent Jesus out of love for the world while enemies.
Greeting and Thanksgiving (Philemon 1:1-8)
- Sender and Recipients: Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, write to Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker, also to Apphia our sister, Archippus our fellow soldier, and the church meeting in your home.
- Grace and Peace: Grace and peace come from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- Thanksgiving and Prayer: Always thank God when mentioning Philemon in prayers, hearing about his love for all God’s people and faith in the Lord Jesus.
- Prayer for Effectiveness: Pray that partnership in faith becomes effective in deepening understanding of every good thing shared for Christ’s sake.
- Joy from Love: Philemon’s love gives great joy and encouragement, having refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.
- Appeal on Love: Although could boldly order what ought to be done, prefer to appeal on the basis of love, as Paul an old man and prisoner of Jesus Christ.
Application
- Obey and forgive on the basis of love for God and one another, as God sent Christ while we were enemies.
