The order of events for the day of the lord
2 Thessalonians 2: 1-12
Audio Summary
2 Thessalonians 2:1-12
Context
- Paul clarifies misconceptions from his first letter about the day of the Lord; church thought it had begun due to intense persecution mistaken for the great tribulation.
- Great tribulation is God’s wrath on unbelievers post-rapture; believers won’t experience it.
- Order of events: gathering to Christ precedes day of the Lord; rebellion and man of lawlessness revealed first, currently restrained.
- Man of lawlessness: opposes God, exalts self in temple, displays power/signs/wonders serving lies; secret power already at work, fully revealed when restrainer removed.
Order of Events for the Day of the Lord (2 Thessalonians 2:1-12)
- Don’t Be Deceived: Don’t be unsettled or alarmed by claims day of Lord has come via spirit, report, or forged letter from us.
- Events Before Day of Lord: Day won’t come until rebellion occurs and man of lawlessness revealed—son of destruction opposing/exalting above gods, seating in God’s temple proclaiming himself God.
- Current Restraint: Paul reminded them of prior teaching: secret power of lawlessness already works, but restrained until restrainer removed; then lawless one revealed, whom Lord Jesus will overthrow by breath of mouth and destroy by splendor of coming.
- Lawless One’s Coming: According to Satan’s work with power, signs, wonders serving lies, wicked deception for perishing who refused truth/salvation.
- God’s Delusion: God sends powerful delusion so they believe lie; condemned for not believing truth, delighting in wickedness.
Application
- Stand firm against deceptions about the day of the Lord; recognize order—rebellion, lawless one revealed before gathering; discern false signs, hold to truth to avoid delusion and condemnation.
