A call to orderly worship
1 Corinthians 14: 26-40
Audio Summary
1 Corinthians 14:26-40
Context
- Comparison of abused communication gifts—prophecy and tongues—causing disorder in public worship at Corinth, preventing the church from being a place of meeting God, salvation, healing, transformation, worship, evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, and ministry.
- Call for order in using gifts, like playing instruments or trumpet calls clearly for understanding; addresses women’s newfound freedom in Christ, leading to misuse due to lack of education/training, not prohibiting their speaking but ensuring submission and order.
Order in Public Worship: Using Gifts for Edification (1 Corinthians 14:26-40)
- Prepare to Build Up: When assembling, each bring a hymn, word of instruction, revelation, tongue, or interpretation; everything done to strengthen the church.
- Guidelines for Tongues: Two or three speak in tongues, one at a time, with interpretation; if no interpreter, remain silent and speak to self and God privately; use both spirit and understanding even in private.
- Guidelines for Prophecy: Two or three prophets speak, others weigh/discern carefully; if revelation comes to another, first speaker stops; all can prophesy in turn for instruction and encouragement, as prophets control their spirits.
- God’s Nature: God is not of disorder but peace, as in all congregations.
- Instructions for Women: Women remain silent regarding tongues and prophecy in church (not prohibiting all speaking, but ensuring order amid liberty); inquire of husbands at home to avoid disgrace; context is married women lacking background, needing to learn parameters of freedom.
- Acknowledgment of Commands: If claiming prophecy or spiritual gifting, acknowledge these as Lord’s commands; ignore them and be ignored.
- Balanced Desire: Eagerly prophesy, do not forbid tongues, but do everything decently and in order; God speaks to women (biblically and through Paul’s female ministry partners), but order is key.
Application
- Prepare gifts for edification in assembly; limit and order tongues/prophecy with interpretation/discernment; women exercise liberty within order, asking questions privately; maintain peace to fulfill church’s purpose.
