Consequences of division. Stagnated spiritual growth
1 Corinthians 3: 1-9
Audio Summary
1 Corinthians 3:1-9
Context
- Paul addresses the Corinthian church’s divisions, caused by their focus on human leaders (Paul, Apollos, Peter) rather than the message of the cross, leading to spiritual immaturity.
- The passage examines the consequences of division, particularly stunted spiritual growth, and clarifies the role of leaders as God’s servants.
Consequences of Division (1 Corinthians 3:1-9)
- Spiritual Immaturity: The Corinthians are spiritually stunted, acting as worldly infants in Christ, unable to handle solid spiritual food due to their divisions and sinful nature.
- Root Causes of Division: Divisions stem from misunderstanding the message of the cross, elevating human leaders over the message, and neglecting the Holy Spirit’s role in revealing truth.
- Indicators of Worldliness: Jealousy and quarreling over leaders (e.g., “I follow Paul” or “I follow Apollos”) reveal their carnal, worldly behavior, controlled by sinful nature rather than God’s Spirit.
- Levels of Spiritual Growth: Spiritual growth progresses from dependence (relying on others), to independence (making personal choices), to interdependence (leading others); division hinders this progression.
- Role of Leaders: Leaders like Paul (who planted) and Apollos (who watered) are mere servants with distinct graces, working together under God, who causes growth.
- God’s Field: The church is God’s field, where leaders are co-workers with God; division rejects leaders’ graces, causing spiritual stagnation and thwarting God’s purpose.
- Purpose: Unity among leaders and members allows God’s grace to flow, fostering spiritual growth and aligning the church with God’s plan.
Application
- Embrace all leaders as God’s servants, avoid division over them, rely on the Holy Spirit for understanding, and pursue unity to grow spiritually and fulfill God’s purpose.
