Biblical marks of the true fellowship P1
1 John 3: 1-10
Audio Summary
1 John 3:1-10
- Context:
- John counters heresies denying Jesus’ incarnation, which degrade the body as evil, using Luke 15 brothers to reflect Jews/Gentiles in a fellowship tainted by immorality.
- Focus on marks of those who abide, resisting heresy’s “cancer.”
- Pillar of Purity (1 John 3:1-3):
- God’s lavish love makes us His children, unknown to the world (v. 1); hope in Christ’s return drives self-purification, mirroring His purity (v. 2-3).
- Mercy empowers purity, rejecting worldly corruption.
- Pillar of Righteousness (1 John 3:4-10):
- Sin is lawlessness, but Jesus appeared to remove it (v. 4-5); abiding in Him stops habitual sin—sinners align with the devil, not God (v. 6-8).
- God’s seed in believers prevents ongoing sin; righteousness and love mark God’s children, not devil’s (v. 9-10).
- Mercy secures righteousness through Christ’s victory over sin.
- Application:
- Abide in fellowship by purifying yourself and standing righteous—rely on Christ’s atonement and the Spirit’s power to resist heresy and live as God’s children.
